Natural Witches Wand

A lot of my readers are asking for information about spells and instructions on how to cast them. Step one, I believe, is an understanding of what a spell is and what we hope to achieve with it.

What is a spell?  I have a collection of more than 5,000, many of which involve the creation of potions and the performance of rituals rather than the use of incantation which is the first thing I think of in connection with ’spells’ – a carefully intoned poem focused through a wand. Words have great power – everything we perceive, all we experience, what we remember and how we remember it, all this is codified linguistically. Spells are attempts to edit, to emphasize, to transform through language. Consider hypnosis and how it can alter perception and behaviour. Consider the use of prayer and the power and comfort many draw from it.

Consider too the use of “I love you” – probably the most powerful binding spell we’ve come up with. The right words delivered in the right way can become irresistible commands, often obeyed instinctively and triggering this ‘programming’ aspect of language is when ritualistic, magical spellcraft is most effective. We use words to convey something in our mind to the mind of another and just as the best poetry is spare and economic with words, so are the best spells. The power of “I love you” lies in what isn’t actually said but nevertheless explodes from those three words like a single zip file filling a computer directory with hundreds or even thousands of files, sub-directories, images, progammes… I think you get the picture. It even has an unspoken need for a response, a need to ‘accept the terms and conditions’ as it were, in order to run it.

The use of ritual, incantation, potions, music – sensual devices, essentially – connects us at a level that shuts out our ‘thought police’ who guard those personal borders that define us and separate us from the wider reality we inhabit.  We use spells to protect, to influence others, to invoke such higher powers as can put a thumb on the wheel of fortune for us. How many of us can spill salt without throwing a pinch over a shoulder? Walk under a ladder? Not make a wish when pulling a wishbone? Superstition is one of the scale, sophisticated and highly intellectualized magic lies at the other and yes, illusion and trickery can often be a major part of it. The Shaman who has studied the stars will be in a similar position to the time traveller who goes back in history with modern technology. The Shaman becomes powerful by drawing down the moon, perhaps with fore knowledge of an eclipse, just as long as he hets the timing right, while the time traveller will be a figure of awe for as long as his batteries hold out. Could ancient wizards really create fireballs in their hands? The science exists: electricity, magnetism, chemical reactions – all can create ‘magical’ effects in the eyes of the uninitiated. The power of the spell lies in how it affects our thoughts and perceptions – removing the supernatural doesn’t make it any less amazing.

My hypnotherapy training is now almost complete and I’ve been hugely encouraged by just how well it sits with Tarot, confirming all that I had long suspected about just how much hypnotism plays a part in face to face readings – readers need to be very aware of just how much they can influence through suggestion.  This can, of course, become a very powerful partnership of disciplines: this last week I have been working on issues, such as smoking and weight loss which are all a part of a much larger issue – that of self esteem, probably the most recurrent central theme for tarot readings.  Increasingly, clients are coming to me with concerns about alcohol, drugs and obesity, and whilst its essential for a reader to emphasise that Tarot is not an alternative to professional help for these problems, it can, in addressing self-esteem, be a very positive reinforcement.
The sun sign forecast for July was the first in a new monthly series. I’ll also be posting these here during the next few days together with links for my in-depth personal forecasts. Thanks for all the feedback on the free Tarot beginners course – I’ve reinstated it now that I’ve completed by hospital visits for, hopefully, the foreseeable future (did you see what I did there? foreseeable… ah well.) I’ve also reinstated the Tarot Professional Course and my book of the same name is now in full publication and available through Amazon – just a reminder that the book is the course book, not the whole course, but – for those of an independent bent  – yes – you can certainly get up and running with the book alone, and if you then decide that you do, after all, need the lessons, assignments & back up that make up the course, this can be arranged.
Here’s a quick tour of all that has caught the wizard’s eye in the past few days:
Quitting Smoking!
I gave up 10 years ago at the 3rd attempt. Woke up one morning, decided that it was ruling my life and stopped. Just like that. Cold turkey. Never backslid. And that ‘once a smoker always a smoker’ thing? Its rubbish, propaganda from smokers who failed to quit. You can eliminate it from your life to the extent that you won’t be able to remember what it was like to be a smoker (but happily without any temptation to find out!). How? I’m not saying… it would take much more than an email! I will shortly be providing a hypnotherapy based programme on a face to face basis but am not convinced it will work at a distance (mind you, I used to say that about tarot).  Two friends have, however, spoken highly of an internet based method – both have now been ‘clean’ for almost a month which is an achievement in itself. It’s offered by Rob Mellor and uses applied NLP, I can’t speak for it myself, obviously. but it’s here if you want to check it out. One good reason to do so is Rob’s guarantee – if you fail, it costs you nothing!

Tarot Tuition with Video
If I could apply myself to the technology I’d do what Stacey Rena does – teach Tarot with the aid of video!  You can get a flavour of her teaching for free, straight to your inbox. Am I jealous? A bit! But the world needs good Tarot teachers! Memo to self, learn how to edit video…

Several readers have asked about an online offer to ‘make you a professional astrologist in 7 days’ – Now maybe its possible to become an astrologist that quickly but it certainly isn’t possible to become an astrologer in 7 days. Not in my professional opinion. So I’ve looked and White Astrology Dot Com are adamant (is adamant? not sure how many people are involved but suspect it to be a one man band) that you can become a real astrologer in a week. You pay not $127 not  $67 but $37 (the previous prices are crossed out) for a 27 page report – and you get lots of bonus reports (one of these on tarot is 50 pages longer!).  We’ve been here before I believe, the collection of assorted odds and ends thrown together as a bunch of eBooks… and no, it isn’t professional. If it seems unlikely that anyone could become a professional astrologer in 7 days it seems even less likely that a 27 page report is going to do the job.  You do get a bonus audio version, complete with pounding house backing track which is very insistent about the vast amounts of money your new skill will bring in. I’d guess its likely that there will be links intended to sell you astrology software, of the indifferent and generic type the interweb is packed to bursting with, not to mention the hosted web page to sell your reports from. There is a guarantee but my view of this opportunity is that it is not for anyone who is seriously interested in astrology. If you only want to consider making money from astrology I very much doubt you’ll get far with this either…
A lot of you keep asking me if I’ll do telephone readings and I keep saying No, no, no (in my best Amy Winehouse tones)…  Know you’re limitations – and this is my boundary I don’t cross. I just can’t read when I’m aware that the cost is ticking up on the meter – even though its often much less than a face to face session. There are some good telephone based readers and I’ve always been happy to mention them – in that spirit, may I recommend Mystic Connections
Mystic Connections offer both Psychic And Tarot Readings, and their friendly site also offers Live Chat Sessions And Email Readings, Angel Insight Readings, Soul Mate Connections, and Reiki Sessions.  No joining fee/membership, no software downloads and no commitment – just choose, order and book – admirable.  There have been good reports and don’t forget that you can always post your findings at heart shaped world for others to see – to see Mystic Connections now

This weeks special offer from the Heart Shaped World Shop: Selling fast…
Doreen Virtue’s Ascended Masters Oracle Cards Cards & Book  – just £12.99 (£2.75 p&p)
Doreen Virtue has created a beautiful deck of cards based on her best-selling book “Archangels & Ascended Masters”. The deck includes gorgeous paintings of 44 male and female cross-cultural deities, such as Ganesha, Merlin, Saint-Germain, Apollo, Pallas Athena, White Buffalo Calf Woman, Jesus, Moses, Yogananda, Green Man, and Kuthumi. The enclosed guidebook gives expanded explanations of each card’s meaning, and a brief history of each ascended master. As with each of Doreen’s oracle-card decks, the messages for each card are positive, accurate, and life-affirming. 44 card deck & guidebook.
This is great value for a book and cards set!
Lastly:
I’ve been asked to recommend the best way to learn astrology. I may be a traditionalist but I think you need to do your first charts the hard way, with pen and paper, ephemeris, atlas… once you have grasped it – it looks daunting but it does quickly become second nature – then you can use the computer for the number crunching – as you will know what short cuts you are taking, and why.  Just one recommendation: Get “Parkers Astrology”. Check my Amazon store (use the search facility if you don’t see one clearly listed) by clicking here.
I’m off back to my books now – I’ve inherited a collection of spells – most of them are very old and involve more herb and potion mixing than incantation. Quite a lot of anointing and daubing – and when these old texts say ’stand in a cool place for four hours’ they really do mean you… oh, great - here’s one that calls for a crossroads, I’ll just grab my guitar! – How did the greatest song in the world go again?
Jez.
